About Us

php|architect has been at the forefront of PHP knowledge since 2002, when we launched our long-running monthly magazine an innovative, easy-to-use PDF format that is readily accessible on all platforms and can be conveniently downloaded and printed from anywhere in the world.

Today, in addition to our monthly publication, which is now also available worldwide by subscription in print format, we organize PHP conferences, provide PHP training the world over and publish our own line of PHP-focused books.

Our History

Like so many great ideas, the concept of a magazine dedicated to PHP developers was born on a cold Toronto day in October of 2002 on the back of a napkin at the local coffee shop. In a short two-month period, co-founders Arbi Arzoumani and Marco Tabini went from the idea stage to a finished magazine, which they started publishing in December of that year.

A combination of limited resources and the need to reach subscribers all over the globe conspired to ensure that php|architect would be published not in a traditional print-only format, but in an electronic format. To preserve the magazine feel, they settled on specially-formatted PDF files that provided a good level of security and were easily portable across multiple platforms.

In September of 2004, php|architect added a print edition alongside its by then popular PDF, and started distributing it a major North American newsstands in January of 2005. In 2004, we also held our first conference—onboard a cruise ship bound for the Bahamas Islands—and in 2005 we started our immensely popular online training program, based on an innovative technology that closely matches a real classroom experience with the convenience of distance learning. In 2006, we launched our own line of PHP-centric books, php|architect's Nanobooks, with the publication of php|architect's Guide to PHP Design Patterns, written by Jason Sweat.

Our future

Today, php|architect offers a wide range of PHP knowledge products; our training curriculum has expanded to include courses that target beginners and advanced users alike, with new classes being added all the time, and our book line now includes several well-received volumes on topics ranging from certification to security. Everything still revolves around our magazine, whose fiftieth issue was published in 2007.
